Every month, I test tons of prompts and one always stands out. This is a fun one as I love seeing what ChatGPT will come up with and it helped me uncover a stock that wasn’t even on my radar.

The Prompt

“Act as a fundamental equity analyst with 20+ years of experience. Based on current U.S. macroeconomic trends, recommend one under-the-radar U.S. stock with strong long-term growth potential. Justify your pick with 3 data-backed reasons, referencing recent financials, valuation metrics, and industry outlook. Briefly mention key risks or concerns.”

The Recommendation

In this instance, it recommended IDACORP (IDA), an energy company that serves customers in Idaho and Oregon. I’m not familiar with it but here’s a summary of ChatGPT’s reasoning for recommending it:

• Explosive regional growth: Idacorp serves one of the fastest-growing areas in the U.S., with rising electricity demand driven by population growth and new data centers.
• Strong financial footing: The company is profitable, reinvesting heavily in infrastructure, and targeting 8% annual earnings growth through 2027.
• Clean energy transition: With two-thirds of its power already from hydropower, Idacorp is phasing out coal and accelerating its shift to lower-cost, cleaner energy.

Why It Worked

• Forced ChatGPT to make a specific, thoughtful pick backed up by facts
• Focused on long-term growth and value not the latest trend(s)
• Surfaced a stock I hadn’t seen mentioned in the usual places

Would I Buy It?

ChatGPT made a strong case for this stock. Considering it’s a utility company with solid growth (for that sector), it’s worth a deeper look. I haven’t done my own full analysis yet but I’ve added it to my watchlist.

How to Use This Prompt

Try this prompt monthly and tweak based on your style:

• Want a dividend stock? Add that to the prompt.
• Prefer international exposure? Ask for non-U.S. picks.
• Want to compare sectors? Run the prompt twice with different focuses.

For example, I used the same prompt again but asked for a healthcare pick. ChatGPT recommended Crinetics Pharmaceuticals (CRNX). I’m not sure it’s a buy right now based on its recent performance but the point is, this prompt helps surface unique ideas worth researching.

After ChatGPT gives 3 reasons to invest, ask: Now play devil’s advocate: Give me 3 reasons why this stock might be a bad investment or why I should avoid it.
This contrast gives you a full picture of the stock and helps curb FOMO.
