The stock market is at record highs. Luxury travel is booming. High end restaurants have wait lists. Consumer spending among higher income households is up and showing no signs of slowing down. If you own assets, have a strong income, or both, things probably look pretty good from where you’re standing.
But there’s another economy running alongside that one and it tells a very different story.

The racial wealth gap continues to widen despite the increase in wealth among all racial groups. As of 2022 the median wealth for Black households was $44,890 compared to $285,000 for white households. This gap doesn’t exist by chance. Specific institutional policies got us here and ensure we remain. Two in particular stand out.

My six-year-old was rushing through dinner the other night. I told her to slow down, and she looked up and asked why. So, I broke it down for her. When you rush through your food you don’t chew it properly and that can cause problems. It takes about 15 minutes for your stomach to tell your brain it’s full, so if you eat too fast you’ll keep going thinking you’re still hungry. Next thing you know your stomach is sticking out and you’re uncomfortable wondering what happened.
